Message from the National PresidentI have just returned from another successful SAG meeting and in talking with other delegates, I came to wonder how many forensic personnel actually know about the work that is performed by this valuable group and NIFS (the National Institute for Forensic Science. For those who don't know, the Specialist Advisory Group (SAG) is made up of a representative from each of the States, usually someone from middle management. There is also a Mentor from SMANZFL (Senior Managers of Australian and New Zealand Forensic Laboratories) who oversees the operation of the group. In the Field and Identification Sciences SAG, there are also three sub groups (SWG's or Specialist Working Groups), Physical Evidence, Firearms and Toolmarks and Fingerprints. The SAG's meet on a yearly basis and are usually in contact at other times either through email or teleconferences. The SAG's usually discuss issues of relevance on a national level and these agenda items may be set by SMANZFL or by the members themselves. At the last meeting of the Field and Identification Sciences SAG, issues that were discussed included items such as Counter Terrorism preparedness, benchmarking, Digital Imaging, the accreditation of Crime Scene officers and national databases. Each of the SWG's meet on an as-needs basis, usually to attend training sessions or to address particular issues of interest to the discipline members. The Chair of each of the SAG's reports to SMANZFL at the annual meeting which this year will be held in Canberra. A lot of interesting and valuable work is carried out by the SAG's and SWG's and all of this work is supported by NIFS through the organization of airfares to attend meetings and places to meet, webspace for information pages, discussion and email groups and the facilitation of training courses. National CouncilThe National Council is made up of the National Executive and a representative from each state branch, usually the branch president. The National Council meets at each Symposium and may meet more often if required. Past members of the National Executive
